Possibly one of the greatest names ever given to a racehorse, “I Am Maximus”—inspired by the film Gladiator—is truly exceptional. With two Grand National victories at Aintree (2024 and 2026) under his belt, he has also secured wins over hurdles at Cheltenham and Newbury.
This painting is inspired by the 2024 Grand National and captures the moment when winning jockey Paul Townend salutes the crowd with his whip as he rides past the winning post to rapturous applause from the spectators.
Racing in the silks of the renowned owner J.P. McManus — no stranger to the winner’s enclosure — I Am Maximus was moved in 2022 to the stables of Willie Mullins at Closutton, Bagenalstown, County Carlow.
An interesting note: in the 2025 Grand National, I Am Maximus was assigned the top weight of 11st 12lb and finished in second place. He returned in 2026 to win the Grand National again, carrying that same top weight of 11st 12lb.In doing so, he echoed the legendary achievement of Red Rum,
the most iconic Grand National horse of all time, who famously secured multiple victories at Aintree and demonstrated extraordinary resilience under weight. Like Red Rum, I Am Maximus has shown not only brilliance but durability,
etching his name into Grand National history. Following his second Grand National victory on 11 April 2026, his record stood at 7 wins, 5 seconds, and 2 thirds from 22 races—suggesting there may be even more to come.

    Print Care & Preparation

    When your print arrives in the post, do not open it straight away.
    Resisting that urge is crucial for preserving your artwork.

    Print CareYour print is a fine art product and, while robust, it’s still delicate.

    The tube it is posted in offers vital protection during transport and storage. Here’s why taking it directly to your framer is the best approach: Unrolling is easy, but re-rolling and re-inserting the artwork back into the tube without damaging it can be quite challenging.

    Professional Handling: Framers are equipped with the right tools and expertise (and often cotton gloves!) to safely unroll, inspect, and prepare your print for framing without causing any accidental creases, smudges, or tears.

    Framing

    Prints tend to look there best behind simple clean frames. The best frame colours to use are plain white, black, grey or
    ash white moulding. I would advise to leave the 40cm white border as it displays the title of the print and the artist signa-
    ture which gives a feel of authenticty your limited editon print.

    Mounts

    Always place your print behind glass. While our fine art paper is quite robust, it remains a paper-based print and requires
    the essential protection that glass provides.
