David Paton is a well known Irish  Artist specialising in Irish landscapes paintings and horse paintings . Based in Co. Meath Ireland, his deep appreciation of everything rural shines through his work in subtle yet vivid ways. Working mainly on location (plein aer) he feels he is better able to capture the changing light along with the fleeting moments that occur right in front of his eyes.

David has attended the National College of Art and Design. He graduated from the from the  DIT College of Marketing and Design in 1987 in visual communication After graduating he spent over 25 years running Paragon Design, his own successful Advertising and Design consultancy in Dublin. However, David’s first love has always been landscape paintings and so in 2018 he decided to take up the craft on a full time basis. David has been exhibited in many group collections, with many pieces being held in private collections both in Ireland the U.K. and much further afield.

Although oils are his main medium, David has also mastered many other mark making techniques such as water colours, ink illustration, and the use of palette knives, often using his impasto technique to capture a scene more spontaneously so that it can be work upon later in his studio. His skill as a draftsman is very apparent in all his work, as he believes it is the foundation stone of his painting and illustration process.

Island Nation Series A series of paintings based around Clare and the Aran Islands.

I have often thought of Dun Angeus as the ultimate Sanctuary. The Islands to me are not bleak or barren, surrounded with grey craggy rocks but rather gives me a feeling of security with a dwelling that is home to me. With the Atlantic sea protecting your back, the high stone walls, and provisions made to protect your herd it must have been the ultimate Bronze age Fort. The drive along Fanore road and the Cliffs of Carnesfin are equally as exciting as The Cliffs of Moher. The Aran Islands never fail to provide to me with stunning locations to make a landscape painting.

David Paton Irish artist loves painting Irish landscape paintings "What I want to capture in when I undertake a landscape painting is a sense of place, the light and fleeting beauty of the scene. I find a ploughed field can be as every bit as interesting and dramatic as a wave violently crashing against the jagged rocks. I am inspired so many times by the sky, and its ever changing moods and light patterns, the way a shaft of sunlight can break through a grey sky and illuminate and change the entire vista in a moment.
